Flip the Script
“Ask for it. Ask for healing, clarity, peace, wisdom, and guidance. Ask for abundance, creativity, love, and light. Don’t be timid in your prayers or requests. Be bold. Be positive. Be grateful. As everything you’re asking for is already making its way to you.”
I read this quote on one of my favorite Instagram feeds, MummaSoulFood. And it inspired this post.
Some of my clients come to me for help with their affirmations. I have found the best way to get started is to Flip the Script. Meaning, take the unhealthy narrative, old story, ego-driven drivel and counter it with what you do want in your life.
But first, a quick primer on affirmations.
Affirmations are your own personal taglines or slogans. You’ve heard of these infamous corporate mantras: “Just Do It”- Nike; “Have it your way”- Burger King; “The Happiest Place on Earth”- Disneyland.
Now that you get the picture, I’m sure dozens of slogans and taglines you’ve heard over the years are flooding your brain. Affirmations are short powerful expressions that help you remain focused on an outcome or belief. They influence your conscious and subconscious mind. Affirmations change the way you think and act. They help you better manage your thoughts on how you view your inner world and outer world. And just as your brain can spout out negative notions, which I won’t post here because I don’t want to reinforce that kind of negativity, you can just as easily pop off a dozen to support the outcomes you do want.
The average person has over 50,000 thoughts a day. That’s an average of 35 thoughts per minute. Plenty of time for your old story to take hold of your narrative and play out on autopilot and bring into your life the less than desired results. This is where affirmations can help.
Take a step back for a second to center and connect with yourself. Is there chatter running through your mind right now? What is it saying to you? Depending on where you are in this journey of mindfulness and managing your mindset, you may be running a negative script of an old story that is comprised of your beliefs and perceptions of days of old…trauma stories, familial and ancestral baggage, and outdated societal and cultural norms. All of those things are happening outside of you, but are heavily influential if you don’t know how to wrangle them. That is not to discount what you experienced or how you feel about your life experiences, but they are just that, it is all happening outside of you.
By getting clear on what you do want to bring into your life through understanding more deeply who you are and what is important to you, you can Flip the Script and see more evidence of your outer reality as a reflection of your inner world.

On my personal journey and that of guiding others, I have found this is the most efficient way to cut to the chase. Affirmations are best derived from your voice and how you think and speak. Below are some recommendations, but you should tweak them to align with how your subconscious responds to your specific “language”.
Here’s how to do it:
Who are you? Not who you think others think you are or perceive you, but who are you to you? Make a list of what you bring to the table in every relationship and situation.
What is important to you? This could be about how you are in your relationships and how others treat you- be it love, family, friends, work, the world! Everything is a connection and relationship - no matter how platonic or romantic, and everything in between.
Write your affirmations. Now that you have these two exercises completed, you can write affirmations that reaffirm what you completed in steps 1 and 2 above. Any thoughts that run counter to your truth of who you are and what is important to you, use your affirmations to quickly and easily Flip the Script.
Example one: Let’s say you are frustrated with your love life. You keep telling yourself that you aren’t worthy of love because all men are commitment-phobes. (There are many happily coupled people out there who will tell you otherwise.) Well, that’s what will show up for you if you persist with that belief.
Flip the Script! You could affirm: My (specific person) is fully committed to me. I am fully committed to my (specific person). Some more: I am safe and secure in all of my relationships. My (specific person) is always meeting my needs. My (specific person) shows me I can rely on and trust them. I show my (specific person) that they can rely on and trust me.
This can apply to someone in particular or if you are affirming someone you have yet to meet. When your thoughts about relationships are negative, use one of these affirmations or your own custom affirmation to change your attitudes about love.
Example two: Health and Fitness affirmations. Let’s say you struggle with your body image. Get clear on what is important to you and your physicality. Be it good health, a sexy body, beautiful hair, skin, and nails, etc.
Flip the Script! You could affirm: I love my body. I am healthy and fit. One of my favorites if you are affirming for a specific physique, is to state your ideal measurements. I have done this and with success. I continue to affirm for it to maintain my focus on having a healthy and fit body of my preference.
This affirmation solidifies the focus on the activities that I need to do to take care of myself. I am putting myself first by making better choices as to how I fuel and exercise my body. My mind stops going to a place of not being worthy of the body I want, rather, I am more inclined to focus on the activities that give me the results I desire. And if I have a day or two where I slip and don’t exercise or eat something less than healthy, I continue to affirm and not beat myself up over it. Always gets me back on track.
Example three: Work and career. Let’s say you are unhappy with your job. Through completing exercises above about work- who you are at work and what is important to you in a job, company, boss, salary/benefits, you can write your affirmations.
Flip the Script! You could affirm: I am the best at what I do. My coworkers and boss love me! I am always being picked for the best assignments. I earn ($xxxx.xxx) a month, year, etc. I get to travel for my job and meet all sorts of interesting people. My coworkers are always asking to work on my projects.
Every day affirm your new story to get the results you desire Take time each day to connect with you are and what is important to you. Repeat your affirmations in a relaxed mindset- when you first wake up and when you are about to drift off to sleep. But you can also say them as you are going about your everyday activities and when you find yourself triggered by your old story. You can affirm them aloud or in your head. There aren’t any rules other than, PERSIST! Persist in the belief that you are worthy of happiness and abundance. You are worthy of life and all the pleasures you desire.
Now go do some good for yourself!
